The Flux Capicitor is what makes time travel possible.....
The Seven Deadly Sins becomes Deadly Sins – Why?
As stated in my first post, I got the idea because I couldn’t remember what all the seven deadly sins were. After finding out the extras about the ‘other’ seven in the bible I thought it would make a good framework for a suspense series.
The theme of the seven deadly sins has clearly been used before but I’ve dropped the ‘seven’ from the title so originality restored.
At the time I thought it would probably be no more than writing practice as I had other ideas further ahead in the queue. Also I don’t have much/any experience writing suspense/horror. Just to get the juices flowing I had a look in my parent’s library.
I really don’t like the cover of this book. It makes it seem like the stories are much more gruesome and gore-ish than they actually are. Also it’s odd because the book is actually a collection of short stories by women writers. Thank goodness on this occasion I did not judge book by its cover. I was pleased to find Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery inside which I’d always been meaning to re-read. Also, stories by Agatha Christie and Elizabeth Gaskell.
Then I was hit by something like inspiration.
Ambuya Mafaticook/Kuruta
– The first story I wrote for the series
Fatcooks are a delicious doughy snack mostly found in Southern Africa. Think of fat as opposed to flat pancakes.
A greedy boy finds the delicious snacks of
Ambuya Mafaticook come at a very
high price.
I was convalescing at my parent’s place. I’m still there now but for the purposes of not paying rent, not recovery. My Dad has a fascinating collection of books from their time in the UK (over 30 years). I particularly like the year compendiums and short story anthologies. I found a book entitled
In that book there was a story by Philip.K.Dick called
The Cookie Lady. I enjoyed the story and it hit me that this would be a good story to adapt and use for the theme of Gluttony.
I typed contact Philip.K.Dick in Google search bar and found a way of requesting permission to adapt his material. Philip.K.Dick is a giant of sci fi writing with many of his novels/stories having been adapted for film. Most famous being Blade Runner from his novel, Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep?
On this contact Philip.K.Dick site I also found a request for anyone who has a copy of an old television adaptation of The Cookie Lady. Spooky huh? Apparently the show was shown on US television in the 70’s. I thought it was an extremely good sign that his people were looking for a copy of the same thing I want to adapt but I’ve yet to hear from them. I sent the email about a month ago. I will keep trying but I will also do the adaptation anyway. Worst case scenario I will use the episode as a pilot.
